Video Surveillance Helps Police Make Arrest

Indian River Assault Defense AttorneyVideo surveillance showed that a man, 36-year-old Barlow Simpson, was kicked and punched nearly 30 times outside a bar in St. Lucie County. According to police records, most of these blows were delivered after he was already unconscious. When the police arrived at Filthy’s Fine Cocktails & Bar around 2 a.m., they discovered Simpson slumped on the sidewalk, his face covered in blood.

He was rushed to the hospital and was found to have a broken eye socket, severed facial muscles and severe bleeding and bruising of the brain. He was unresponsive and unable to communicate in any way for many days after his attack. He will never be the same as he was before his accident.

An arrest was made this past Tuesday of 32-year-old Conway Fields. Fields has been charged with attempted second-degree murder. The owner of Filthy’s told the police that Fields was a regular customer that never gave any trouble. Bouncers within the bar broke up an argument inside the bar the Sunday before Fields’ arrest. One of the bar employees said that Simpson kept bumping his chest into Fields in an attempt to instigate a confrontation. Simpson was seen standing outside the bar when Fields left the building a few minutes later.

No one is sure what exactly caused the conflict, but a witness said that Simpson made a comment to Fields, who then turned around and punched him in the face. According to hospital, Simpson sustained a severed traumatic brain injury and will need at least two years to recover what limited function he will have left. Fields is being held in the Indian River County Jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned on December 19, 2018.

This story is the perfect example of why someone would need an Indian River criminal defense attorney. If Fields is innocent of the crime, he could face a severe penalty and will spend many years in jail. In his case, only an Indian River criminal lawyer will be able to help him avoid jail time. If he is in fact guilty, an Indian River assault defense attorney can also help obtain a lighter sentence, thereby reducing his time behind bars and allowing him to make a fresh start sooner rather than later.
